What is Dwarf Fortress?

Dwarf Fortress is a singleplayer fantasy game with several distinct game modes based in a randomly generated, persistent world.

Its most popular mode, Fortress, has the player take on the control of a dwarven outpost

Another mode, Adventurer, puts the player in control of a single hero of any race and skill, and plays out like a traditional roguelike.

The third and last mode, Legends, is less of a game and more of a chronicle of the entire world you've generated. Read about the rise and fall of nations, of heroes and monsters and even the occasional rise of a demon king. This mode also includes the stories from your forts and adventurers.
